The Lay Of The Land
Two Bridges takes its name literally: the Manhattan Bridge approach forms its northern edge and the Brooklyn Bridge its southern, with the East River along the east side. The bridges are part of daily life here. Trains rumble over the Manhattan Bridge, the bike path to Brooklyn starts a block away, and the waterfront along South Street opens onto Pier 35 and the East River esplanade.
The housing is layered by decade. Six-story tenements from the early 1900s line Madison, Monroe, Henry and Cherry Streets, many with renovated walk-up apartments. Mid-century public housing campuses occupy several superblocks with towers set in lawns. Since the late 2010s, high-rise rental towers have risen on the waterfront blocks near Rutgers Slip and Pike Slip, bringing doorman buildings, amenity floors and river views to a neighborhood that previously had none.
The F stops at East Broadway and the B and D at Grand Street, both on the neighborhood's northern edge, and Chinatown's bus and bakery corridor along East Broadway is a few minutes on foot. The Seaport and the Financial District are a short walk south under the Brooklyn Bridge.
Street life centers on Chinatown's southern reach and the parks: Coleman Playground under the bridge, the basketball courts along Cherry Street, and the waterfront. Nightlife is elsewhere; this is a neighborhood for people who want the Lower East Side and Chinatown within reach and a quieter block to come home to.
