Hudson Yards is the newest neighborhood in Manhattan, built over the rail yards west of Tenth Avenue between 30th and 41st Streets. Its housing is a set of very tall rental and condo towers with amenity floors, wrapped around the Vessel, the Shed and the northern end of the High Line. The 7 train terminates at 34th Street-Hudson Yards, and Penn Station is a ten-minute walk.

The Lay Of The Land

Hudson Yards was a working rail yard until a platform was built over it in the 2010s, and everything on top is new: a public square with the Vessel at its center, the Shed's arts building, a retail mall with a food hall, and a cluster of office and residential towers that rank among the tallest in the city. The High Line's final section curves through the site, and Bella Abzug Park runs along the 34th Street axis.

The apartments are in a small number of very large buildings. Rental towers like 15 Hudson Yards and the buildings at Manhattan West offer floor-to-ceiling glass, river or skyline views from the upper floors, and amenity packages that run to pools, lounges, screening rooms and concierge service. Layouts are efficient and modern, closets are real, and the buildings are managed to a hotel standard. There is no prewar stock and no walk-up.

The neighborhood is still filling in around the edges. Hell's Kitchen's restaurants begin a block north on Ninth and Tenth Avenues, Chelsea's galleries start south of 30th, and the Javits Center and the Lincoln Tunnel approaches occupy the west and north. Wind off the river is a feature of the open plazas, and the streets are quiet after the shops close.

The 7 train stops at 34th Street-Hudson Yards and reaches Times Square in one stop and Grand Central in two. Penn Station, with the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3, LIRR, NJ Transit and Amtrak, is about ten minutes on foot, and the West Side Highway and Hudson River Park are at the end of the block.
