The Lay Of The Land

Dumbo, the strip below the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, was a nineteenth-century manufacturing district whose brick and timber warehouses now hold some of the most expensive apartments in Brooklyn. The cobblestone streets, the bridge overheads, and the views back to Manhattan have made it one of the most photographed neighborhoods in the city. It is compact and dense, packed between the water and the approaches to the bridges.

The housing is converted loft and new condo. Warehouse buildings have been turned into high-ceilinged lofts with oversized windows, and newer towers along the water have added full-amenity condos and rentals, both oriented to the harbor and skyline views. The market skews to ownership and to the premium end, with larger layouts common.

Transit is workable. The F stops at York Street, the A and C reach High Street a short walk away, and the 2 and 3 are accessible at the downtown edge, with the East River Ferry adding a scenic ride from Fulton Ferry Landing. Manhattan is one quick stop across the river.

Brooklyn Bridge Park, the restaurants and galleries along Water Street, and the waterfront itself define the neighborhood. Dumbo suits someone who wants a loft or a view-oriented condo at the top of the Brooklyn market, and who values living on the waterfront with the skyline at the door.
