The Lay Of The Land

Chelsea occupies the West Side from roughly 14th to 30th Streets, between Sixth Avenue and the river. Its eastern blocks hold rows of brownstones and the historic district around Cushman Row, its western blocks the converted warehouses that became the city's contemporary gallery district, and the far west the new towers rising along the High Line and the Hudson. The neighborhood reads as a series of distinct textures within a short walk.

The housing is varied. Brownstone floor-throughs and walk-ups fill the tree-lined side streets, large postwar cooperatives like London Terrace and the Penn South complex add scale, and the West Chelsea blocks carry glassy new condos and rentals with full amenities. The unit mix runs from compact studios to large layouts, at a correspondingly wide range of prices.

Transit is excellent. The 1 runs under Seventh Avenue, the C and E under Eighth, the F and M under Sixth, and the L crosses 14th Street, so nearly every block sits near a train, with the express stops a short walk off. The neighborhood is genuinely multi-line.

The High Line, the Chelsea galleries, and the food hall at the southern end anchor the public life, with the Hudson River Park along the water. Chelsea suits someone who wants a central, design-minded West Side address with everything from a brownstone walk-up to a doorman tower available, and who values walkability and culture at the door.
