The Lay Of The Land

Bushwick stretches east and north of Williamsburg, a large neighborhood that mixes old manufacturing blocks with long rows of rowhouses and multifamily buildings. Its industrial stretches, especially around Flushing Avenue and the Morgan Avenue corridor, have filled with studios, galleries, and music venues, while the residential streets toward Knickerbocker and Wyckoff keep their brick and frame houses. Murals cover many of the walls, and the neighborhood wears its mix of uses openly.

The housing is varied and generally more attainable than the waterfront neighborhoods. Converted warehouse lofts and new construction cluster near the industrial blocks, while the bulk of the supply is apartments in two- to four-family rowhouses and walk-ups, often with more space per dollar than Williamsburg or Greenpoint. Renovation quality ranges widely, from raw lofts to gut-renovated units.

Transit runs on the eastern lines. The L follows the Williamsburg path through the northern blocks at Morgan, Jefferson, and DeKalb, and the M, J, and Z run along the Myrtle Avenue elevated through the southern half, so most of the neighborhood sits near one of those lines. The L gives the quickest ride to Manhattan.

The bars, venues, and restaurants along Wyckoff, Irving, and Knickerbocker, and the green of Maria Hernandez Park, anchor the social life. Bushwick suits someone who wants creative energy and more space than the waterfront at a lower rent, and who is comfortable in a dense neighborhood that still mixes living and industry.
